#60 10 INCREDIBLY HELFUL TIPS TO SAVE MONEY WHILE TRAVELING
What an enormous power a simple piece
of thin paper can have on us humans … money.
Some of us have a lot of paper, others have enough to life a good life we would call 'normal', more than just a few have barely nothing.
But when you are traveling, oh when you're traveling it turns out to be a completely different story.
Even though it does obviously depend on which place in our big world you have chosen as your next place to be, I have barely met any (long time) traveler who did not have to waste some thoughts on their wallet and the relationship between them and what fills it.
I spent a lot of time contemplating about mine, listening to people who have never even had the chance of spending just as half as much money as I do per week, listening to others who could spend it all within one week if they want to but first of all - listening to myself when standing in front of mirrors like that. I still allow myself to spend some notes on clothing, still buy those $5 coffee rather than making my own using some weird powder and boiling water, still pay $8 for a beer. By now, I have figured out how to keep track of my expenses and to avoid ending up completely broke (even though it was quite an experience).
I collected these 10 helpful tricks that will help you to keep your coins together !
Book your flights smart
Remember my detailed description of how much I hated waking up at crazy times in the early morning just to catch the plane to Adelaide ?
Well, as you can probably guess – I didn't choose that time at my favorite one to travel. Always try to be flexible with your days and times, try to fly on Tuesday or Wednesday and really early in the morning to catch a break in fares.
My all time favorite to compare fares and to find the ideal flight for me is Skyscanner as it gives you not only the possibility to find the cheapest months to fly, but also to choose the most affordable place to depart and arrive in the country of your choice.
Use cash
Here in Australia, you just tap the credit card on the eftpos machine to fix up your bill, which makes it pretty easy to loose track of your expenses. Try to take cash – only cash – to be aware of how much you are spending and to keep your bank account filled. You will be surprised how much that helps !
Set a daily budget and stick to it
This can be quite hard at the beginning, as I know most of us have those little voice whispering in our ear that we are on holiday, that we should enjoy our life and don't give a damn. If you want to stay on the road though, without ending up broke, it is quite important to keep a better eye on you're daily expenses. As I've already said – leave your credit card alone, take the cash you need to spend your day and go without the tempting, expensive treats. You will figure out how much you really need each day pretty quickly, if you go over this budget - cut it back the next day, if you manage to spend less you might be able to afford some shopping later. It is a great way to learn how to deal with money and to travel longer !
Stay away from shops and summer sales
I used to waist quite a lot of money on clothes, accessories and other fashion items that where tempting me out of the stores window here and there, which is surely the reason for why I ended up broke a few times. Even though it was always an interesting experience to pass the week without any money left – I had to stop buying. After reorganizing my whole wardrobe I finally realized how many clothes I have owed without even wearing them once. I decided to donate a few of them and to keep only my favorites, which did additionally make my backpack way lighter and so much more comfortable to carry around. From then on I stayed away from the big shopping emporiums, which are expensive in almost every aspect anyway, and just treat myself from time to time with some new pieces I do really like a lot. This helped me so much not only to become more aware of my needs, but also to get more creative with those clothes I own and to develop my own unique style!
Never leave without some snacks and drinks in your bag
Remember these practical lunch boxes you had in school ? They are coming back ! And even if it's just a bottle of water and an apple in your bag you will be saving money on snacks. Especially in bigger cities, it is pretty easy to spend your savings on those delicious little threats seducing you out of the bakeries window, and trust me – they will start to ad up in one point. I collected many good memories stopping somewhere to eat my pre-packed lunch or dinner, meeting awesome people, having good conversations and saving some coins at the end of the day.
Take the public transport
Isn't it ridiculously easy to just wait for a minute on the side of the road and catch the next cap ? It might be comfortable and relaxed – until it comes to the payment. The easiest way is rarely the smartest one. Try to make use of the public transport as often as possible, which is surprisingly good in almost every bigger city. You will not only treat your wallet, but also get a better idea of the locals lifestyle and might end up in the most beautiful places when accidentally taking the wrong bus or train.
(If you are under time pressure or just want to be comfortable from time to time catch an Ueber Taxi, which works out a bit cheaper than a regular cap)
Don't stay in Hotels
Instead of spending tons of cash for a hotel room each night, try housesitting, couchsurfing, volunteering or to work for accommodation. You'll be surprised about the possibilities most places offer you to protect your money and also to make memorable experiences most people don't !
Don't hesitate to talk to locals
My golden travel rule, which you can apply in many many situations of your journey – talk to locals and don't be shy to ask them questions about their home ! You will be surprised about the information you get and maybe even make some new friends ! A good ice-breaker is always to ask for directions or simple advice (How do I get to street x?”).
Travel off-peak
I remember being absolutely amazed by how affordable Thailand was when I visited this beautiful country for the first time during the monsoon-season. When I came back a few years later, visiting the same places at the same time as most tourists and travelers, I was shocked by the increased prices. Do a little research to not to end up spending too much money for accommodation, food and co, just because you are in the wrong place at the wrong time. Especially South East Asia is even more enjoyable during the low-season, as less tourist lead the countries to be way more authentic and you to experience it in a way most other wont.
Treat yourself
Don't forget to be generous to yourself from time to time. It is great to live on a budget, save money and make unique experiences, but life is a book we are writing ourselves, so who said it is not allowed to break the rules from time to time ?
Pick one day at the end or the beginning of each month, take your favorite dress out and treat yourself however you like it the best.

#58 ROADTRIP IN PICTURES
As I
want to share as much as I possibly can about the best drive of my life
- the great ocean road -, I will make a start through publishing some
of my favorite pictures with you.
Most of them were shot by my friend, as I was busy driving. Some were shot by me during a break. All of them are telling a story.
Most of them were shot by my friend, as I was busy driving. Some were shot by me during a break. All of them are telling a story.
The
water to my right, my beloved friend to my left. The driving wheel
laying in my hands, quiet and calm as if it never belonged anywhere else
and the endless road in front of me, promising millions of paths,
adventures and thoroughness.
“I'm
a sensual adventurer, Sue. I want to explore the passion I feel, really
dig into the heart of it, the dark parts, too. I wanted to take you on
that journey with me. But if you don't want to go, that's fine.”

There
is absolutely nothing I know in this world that could ever beat the
feeling afflicting me when letting the ocean take over control. Those
feeling burning through my body, starting out at my ears which are
absorbing the waves soft melody while my eyes are never getting tired of
watching them crushing against the majestic cliffs.
“Maybe
we should live our lives in a constant state of expectation, always
curious and excited about the possibilities that could unfold in front
of us. Maybe it is our sense of vision that colors our reality.”

So.
It has been a really long time since I took the time to be active here
on my little baby. Well, I have been damn busy – and broke. I'm still
broke, counting $3 on my bank account, but my Laptop is charged, my
music playing, the sun is shining and my van parked safely. Yes, I am
living out of a van – but let's start where we left of. Adelaide,
Roadtrip, traveling alone again.
So let's see what I wrote down more than a months ago !
So let's see what I wrote down more than a months ago !

Sydney. Bondi. Beach. “awful painting of waves here” I can hardly remember my last day off – can hardly remember my last – public – piece of writing. So this one I call 'diary', so where do I start ? (bad repetition Kim) Before my friend left, we flew to Adelaide, spend a few beautiful days there together and made our way along the stunning Great Ocean Road up to Melbourne. As I happened to be the only one holding a valid drivers license, I had the pleasure to drive us all the 800km (roughly) from A to B (or 'M' in this case – your not as funny as you think you are). It was, without even the smallest thought of doubt (pretty sure the formulation is not correct at all), the most beautiful drive of my life so far, the most exiting one and (also) the most thoughtful one. (If this would be a serious article, I would change the word 'thought' below – well, past-Kim: my auto correction agrees with that). We had rain, darkness, assholes on the road driving next to me (oh yes!) - but nothing matters (well, some of them made me really crazy) as we enjoyed the overwhelming presence of the endless ocean lingering to our right. I will not miss to write a more detailed, better written article about this memory, as it was one of the best ones in my life. It lightened up that fire inside of me, which I failed to keep alive for some time (drama baby). We arrived in Melbourne, enjoyed our last days together. She flew home & I made my way back to Sydney (again by catching an uneconomical plane). Alone again, when I arrived at the KXB (Kings Cross Backpacker Hostel), where I stayed for the next few weeks, working for accommodation, saving money, following my other job as a waitress and being haunted by this more than unpleasant feeling of that I do nothing but working. What a life. It's not like I couldn't do all that – physically: no worries. But you know what? - I don't f*** want to. Not anymore. Not in Australia.
That's why I decided to move out, find a flat and pay rent. (and this is where the part in which I loose my money and end up completely broke in a van starts) That was one of the best decisions during my time here so far (yep, broke but happy). I decided to live again. (Yeah.. we got it Kim – good decision). To take a break, don't let the money pressure push me down, don't let work tiring me out till I have no energy left, don't live my life like that. (Got it? Good decision “approving smiley here pls).It might sound a bit too serious but - for me – that decision was incredibly important (Bla Bla Bla). I moved to a great shared flat in Bondi, spent time at the beach, had good parties with my flatmates and enjoyed my awesome life. (For three weeks, until the landlord kicks us out – but more of that later)

#56 THOUGHTS
Am I
only complaining ? Cause I do feel like I am at the moment. Complaining
about myself, about my life and - of course - about my art. About the
money I really never have (nothing new actually), about the weather
(which is in fact really good over here compared to Germany), about my
flatmates keeping the apartment pretty messy (hate it!) and here and
there some guys being silly little boys. Well, as you see, actually I am
just complaining about myself, because that is where it all comes from.
Being happy is a decision, one I did make. I am happy. It still feels
like there is those little piece missing, the writing - as usual - the
art. I want to write. I have to write. It is the missing piece. So,
well, I am on it. I mean, not to write some nonsense like that, but some
useless sh**. Some articles to help you guys out there making the most
of their travels, no matter if long or short. You look at all these
great travel blogs, being inspired, amazed and intimated. How do they
write those beautiful lines ? How did they get through all these html
sh** ? Why can I not write like that ?
Well, let's find out and give it a shot, cause that is all I have.
**This post is so much more for me, but that is how I want this to be. This blog, mine. Authentic and honest.

#55 ADELAIDE - CHECK
Finally.
I finally pressed those small blue 'publish' button that converted my
draft into an actual post. I have been planing to write this article for
so long, read so many (damn good ones) from other writers, wrote down
many many phrases in those little book that was supposed to lead me
through this. I wanted to give you a really good, professional guide
about how to spend a short time in Adelaide. Well, don't get me wrong, I
still want to write professional guides for those you out there who
need advise, but I had to admit that I am not there yet. I know that I
am just starting, I know that my English is not as good as I want it to
and I know that I need to improve also my writing a lot. Anyhow, I've
decided to just jump down from that cliff which would not allow me to
have a glance at the ground I am facing, I've decided to just write that
article. Right now.
I don't change my goal – never change my dreams – but I change my path. I chose the way that might be a bit longer - therefore less stony and full of light to nourish my heart.
I don't change my goal – never change my dreams – but I change my path. I chose the way that might be a bit longer - therefore less stony and full of light to nourish my heart.
However, who of you is planing a trip to Adelaide but short on time ?
When visiting any place, I hardly try to avoid the feeling of that I am 'not done', that my limited eye hasn't seen enough of those piece of our big world which is surrounding me there. I do really like to read through some guides in order to convince myself of that I took advantage of my time.
That is why I want to share with you my ultimate guide on how to see, do and eat your way through the very best of Adelaide.

The
capital of south Australia has so much more to offer than the
(absolutely tasty) wine it is so well known for. Not only that the city
will feed your eyes with deeply green colors you can spot in it's many
parks, but you will find your attention distracted by stylish
architecture, your ears gently listening to some relaxed street music
and your naked feet kept warm by the sand you find at the 30km of
beaches stretching along its suburb.
So here's my ultimate guide on how to spend a day in Adelaide !
First things first - Breakfast at Nutrition Republic
Start your day at at the southern territory of the city with a pilgrimage to the adoring combination of great coffee and healthy food : Nutrition Republic (1/100 King William Road, Goodwood, South Australia 5034 ). I was truly amazed by this place as it offers not only the great coffee I have already mentioned, but a wide range of other drinks as any sort of tea and fresh juices at reasonable prices. In combination with one of their delicious breakfast bowls or just some baked goodies, this place is ideal to treat yourself in the the morning.
(around $20 for a big breakfast)

Beach baby !
I hope you packed your swimsuit as Adelaide has stunning beaches to offer which you shouldn't miss. Walk approx 15 min to the tram stop (Stop 2, Wayville) and catch the train towards Glenelg, which will take you close to the ocean within 25min. Get off at Moseley square (Stop 17) take out your blanket, enjoy the sun and give yourself some time to relax at this beautiful white-sand beach.
Believe me one thing - I know too well, that you could spend your whole day here, but you should really not miss a walk through the historic village. As soon as the sun start's scorching your skin, it is time to browse Glenelg's bustling shops and pretty cafés on Jetty Road, mosey through Moseley Square and along the jetty as you overlook the water and don't miss a quick look into the free museum (located in the Town Hall in Moseley Square) to expand your knowledge with some details about the area's rich history and heritage.

Lunch – Vego and Love'n it
Once you're done scoping down the beach head back towards the city and convince yourself of that a burger doesn't need meat to be delicious ! The tram 'H20' (from Zone B Colley Tce - West side, close to Moseley Square) will easily take you to Stop 1 Grenfell St - North side, from which Vego and Love'n it is reachable within a few steps. If you haven't figured it out yet, you're going to need a pair of pants that stretches with you – as the wide range of veggie burgers is simply overwhelming. You will be able to combat your hunger for around $15.

The north terrace
Stuffed ? Go for a walk to support your body digesting ! Make your way over to the northern parts of the city and wander around. Apart from the State Parliament, The University of Adelaide and the Convention Centre, this area hosts the impressive Art Gallery of South Australia presenting big names of Australian art and the South Australian Museum. Round off your walk by visiting among 50 hectares of maintained gardens and impressive pieces of architecture in the Botanic Garden. Depending on your interests, it is the best place to get deeper in whether the history, the art, the people or the nature of that place.

Adelaide Oval
Considered as one of the most attractive grounds in the world, the Adelaide Oval is not to miss on your trip – walk approx 15min from the Art Gallery via Kintore Ave and soak in the energy of this impressive building. Depending on your time and points of interests, you can do a guided tour $22 for around to explore inside the iconic scoreboard and get to know more about it's history. (Tours operate at 2pm on weekdays, which means that you would probably have to modify your plan a little bit to be there in time – I suggest to go before you are heading to the north terrace)

#48 HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Isn't
your birthday one of the best days of the year ? For me it is. It
always was ! It is quite hard to describe but I guess there are two
kinds of persons when it comes to these things - some people just don't
treat their day of birth as something special but put it to the
collection of all these 'normal' day's that each of us has. Why not.
When it comes to my birthday I appreciate my life, I appreciate my
family, my home and everything which comes up in my mind or just passes
it even on a long distance - I endeavor to use that day as 'my day', try
not to worry but to be just happy - be purely happy and grateful. My
family knows that and appreciates it. This year, last week it was not
like that, I am not with my family, I am 14,461 km far away to be more
detailed. Even though the day felt was way more strange than just a bit -
so much that I would pretty reluctantly call it a 'real' birthday - I
had a great time which I want to share with you guys. My beloved friend
which is accompanying me overseas made the most tastiest cake, we placed
some presents on our small wooden dining table and she turned on
birthday songs when the first sunbeams became strong enough to pass my
skin and light up my mind for the upcoming day that morning.
Another
wonderful person from back home came over to grab a piece of the piece
of heaven/cake and joined me to Sydney's famous Zoo - which you can
visit for free on your birthday - later. Even though we messed up the
time and had only a little left in the end to actually see some animals,
it was a lot of fun !
There are plenty of other freebees you can collect a when spending the day on which you were born a couple of years ago in Sydney - check out this list ! You will find a few where the signing up process will cost you more effort than for the others. We did successfully collected are a free meal from Subway, a beautiful (!) Chai Tea from Gloria Jeans , a $25 Voucher from Bondi pizza, a Juice from Boost and - of course - the Zoo Entry !

Isn't it sad how vigorously people avoid enjoying mother natures
incredible beauty when see sun goes down by distracting their eyes -
obviously on purpose - using these little pieces of metal ?
#50 HOW TO FIND A JOB IN AUSTRALIA
I am here to work and to travel afterwords. Sounds familiar ?
It is probably one of the most likely things people do after their graduation, and it definitely is a great way to keep your wallet filled ! But what's the least fun part of the working holiday in Australia?
The step back into reality – basically the search for a job, which comes obviously with the challenge of making conscious effort and is a tough call for some, which is why I collected some of my experiences for you.
1. PREPARE
You managed to get your Visa, packed your Backpack – basically you are ready to start, right ?
No. You will have to do so many things to care about once you are
there, so try to figure out what you can prepare in advance. I started
working on my CV in Asia, but I have not taken enough time on writing
and rather spend most of it on the beach. Afterwords I hardly regret
this as there was so much to organize over here that I struggled to find
enough time to finish it properly while I knew that it is essential to
even apply for a job. (Although most Aussies do not really care about
your CV – you are always supposed to hand it out)
Further you
can start to inform yourself about the different options you have
according your future bank account (required), a sim-card (if needed),
how to get a tax number and maybe even where you could imagine living
(in case you plan to rent a apartment).
2. ORGANIZE
Think about it. What do you really want to work – even if only for a
short time ? How much money do you need ? Where do you want to live ?
How do you want to spend your time abroad ?
We are all here to work –
but work is work and even if you find a good one, there is so much more
to do during your stay! I love my job, but life wouldn't be fun without
some free time. Me and my friend cared about renting an apartment when
we didn't even have a a job – now we are riding our bikes for around 30
min every day just to get to work. It is a great workout but can also be
called a waist of time.
Do it step by step ! Figure out what is the
best way to use your time overseas and make a rough plan for
yourself. How do you want to get to work ? (is the public transport
affordable?) Which part of the city seems to provide an environment that
fits your personal interests?
3. DONT LIE TO YOURSELF
No one is seriously honest in his CV – and everybody tells you to lie, but you should at least keep it close to reality !
If you don't have any experience as a waitress, Barista or bar stuff –
don't pretend that you worked in that field for a long term as it can
get pretty uncomfortable at a trial to not to know what (and how) to do.
Keep it simple and rather talk about your character strength's – you
are friendly, honest, reliable … but first of all highly motivated ! You
probably wont work a difficult job during your stay here, which means
that there is no reason for your employer to not to hire people with
less experience who seem to be great in many other points and want to
learn. Just prove it to them.
I did not have worked any major jobs as a waitress – after around 2 weeks I felt pretty confident in that working field.
According to my CV, I have collected 'first experiences as a waitress'
at home, which is not a lie, but for sure not exactly what my boss was
looking for. I was willing to learn and gave my best, not only at the
trial but until now, which is way more important to her. If you find a
job that seems to suit you well, give it a shot without telling too much
in your application, but rather wait for the trial to show how much you
want the employment.
4.GUMTREE
There are
many different websites promising jobs such as Seek or Indeed. I can
highly recommend to use Gumtree as it turns out that the big sites are
filled with recruiters and only a few options for temporary workers.
Anybody can post an ad on gumtree, without much effort and for free,
which causes the small companies, cafes and restaurants to more likely
post there.
I found not only my job there, but also my flat!
5. DONT BE SCARED
At the end of the day – it is just work. No big deal and – first of all – no big difference to home !
If you're doing bad at a trial (what happens to me quite often at the
beginning), don't be down but just continue searching. Some people might
find a job within 3 days – it took me 3 weeks for me, maybe even longer
for you. I had so many bad trials, even a horrible job for some time
which I quit in the end. That's alright. Just don't be scared, at the
end you will find a great place to work – not to start your life here,
but to realize that it has already started !
6. JUST DO IT
You DON'T HAVE TO prepare, don't have to plan, don't have to do
whatever the internet tells you to. It is your time and nobody can tell
you anything about it, if you disagree – screw it.
But you have to
do it – that list just tells you how I did it, there is no need for you
to stick to it or to anything else. The best advice I can give you – if
you really want to find a job here – is to just go, print out your CV,
hand it out wherever you pass on the way, text employers on gumtree … in
other words: just get serious about it.
Cheers!

#45 ARTICLE
Hey there ! I just want to share my first published article with you guys, would love if you have a look and leave your thought ! :)

#44 SKYDIVE
Yes, we did it. We jumped out of a plane and paid for it ! And it was truly amazing.
You feel all your muscles contracting - facing the fear of the upcoming
jump - all the way up in the plane, your head thinking literally
nothing and your eyes about to estimate the growing distance back to the
ground. It takes approximately around 10 min until you reach the
customary distance on which the plane gets rid of your weight - time to
jump ! Me and my friend have been the last ones in the plane - the last
ones standing basically :P - which meant that we've seen all the other
people just falling out of the plane (no joke-that is exactly how it
looks like), we saw them screaming while leaving too fast to even hear
the duly sound and we slowly internalized that we are next. The next
step happens so fast that I can hardly remember it - the jump. I was
screaming till the surrounding CO2 should have actually been used before
realizing what I was doing in that very moment, before internalizing
the distance I kept to everything down on earth and the resemblance to
those foolish - but quite common - childhood dream of flying I still
cherish somewhere in my heart. And of course - there was also a rather
small piece of fear coming up in that moment. What if it doesn't work?
If something goes wrong ? - You're dead - that is what would happen in
that case. But I am still alive and wouldn't even have to think about
jumping a second time. I felt literally free - acknowledged the distance
I kept to the earth and everything on it for those short time that did
not felt as little as it was and loved the incredible amount of
adrenaline floating through my incapable body like fire, burning out all
the fear.
One moment later you feel something pulling you ab - the
parachute ! You slow down, start to float around in the air like a
feather - as if gravity would fail on your body. The flight is over!
Lean back and enjoy the view !
Ja,
Was, wenn etwas schief laueft ? Was wenn etwas kaputt geht ?
Of course - the instructor managed to do crazy stuff during the fall

#42 OPERA HOUSE
I
have already showed a few pictures of the impressive Opera house you can
find in the northern part of Sydney and want to ad some information to
honor that building as much as it deserves it.
Most of you do have probably already seen it on several pictures as it is undoubtely Sydney's most famous sight and detected as one of the 20th century's most characteristic and famous buildings. But why ?
Most of you do have probably already seen it on several pictures as it is undoubtely Sydney's most famous sight and detected as one of the 20th century's most characteristic and famous buildings. But why ?
Well
located on Circular Quay, near Sydneys central business district, close
to the also quite famous Harbour Bridge that allows visitors to find
their way over Sydney Harbour to the North Shore, the building and it
surroundings form an remarkable and unique Australian image.
Dance, concerts, opera and theatre are staged in the five performance spaces covered by the likewise artistic complex that causes Tourists, most with no interest in opera, throng to the building in their thousands purely to admire it's soaring shell like exterior. Whether you like it or not, there is no denying that to find 1,056,000 Swedish tiles establishing the buildings 67 meter high roof is highly impressive. Sadly, the architect Jorn Utzon died in 2008 having never seen the finished design in person.

#40 C \\ LOST IN THAILAND
I am carrying the idea for this post for quite a long time in one bottom area of my brain. It is the idea of publishing some pictures of my beloved friend I shot this year. It was her first time visiting Thailand, her first time visiting Asia and want to convey that using my photographs.
I want to impart the experience of discovering something new, the freedom each of us feels when we are on vacation and the warmth you can find in Asia not only in the hot weather but in the heart of every local.
'A Travel is the only thing you can buy that makes you richer', right ?
